History of Our Waco UBF-2
The F Series of Waco aircraft were introduced in 1930 and were an instant success. The second model of the series, the F-2, had more horsepower, a stronger frame and a higher cruise speed than its predecessor, and quickly established its reputation as a highly dependable and maneuverable aircraft. Waco test pilots demonstrated it had better short field performance for take offs and landings than that of the Pitcairn Autogyro of the same era. Its "Y" airfoil and Continental 670 engine gave it a 1500 ft./min rate of climb and a cruise speed of 115 mph.
The Waco UBF-2 was named the "Tourist" by the manufacturer as a testimony to not only its performance, but also to its comfort when flying cross country The Waco UBF-2 flown by Atlas Aero rolled off the assembly line at Troy, Ohio in 1933, purchased by Wall Street banker, Malcolm Mckay. This aircraft has passed through a number of owners, including well known New England airshow performer, Howard Dutton. Its most recent restoration was completed at Van Sant Airport in Bucks County, Pennsylvania in the mid 1990s and it is one of approximately 25 F-2s flying today.
